Back In Black

His ill-fated flirtation with silver jumpsuits and rubber boobs behind him, Marilyn Manson has returned to his dark roots. Maybe his fashion awakening is due to his much-publicized reunion with mentor Trent Reznor. "I'm so goth, I'm black!" joked Manson when cornered at the VIP bar at the after-party for Nine Inch Nails' sold-out Madison Square Garden show in May. The man who proclaimed rock dead just last year will launch another attack on TRL-style mediocrity with the fall release of a new studio album, Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death). "Sound Scan figures don't matter if you can write real songs. I produce chaos," he said. Despite that, Manson radiated the inner serenity of a Tinseltown lama as he held court for a group of gorgeous goth girls and celebs like Art Alexakis, Everlast, director John Waters, writer Bret Easton Ellis, and actor Casey Affleck. "It's good to be back," he declared. Despite his apparent rehabilitation, Manson managed to get in a dig at ex-tourmate Courtney Love (who is depicted as an obese plastic-surgery disaster in NIN's latest video, "Starsuckers, Inc."). "Courtney promised she'd lose some weight for the role," he quipped. Reached for comment, Love laughed and said, "I'm nine feuds past him. Now I'm feuding with Tom Green, Russell Crowe, and Chris Rock. I can't even remember that feud. It's so old school."
